Dragon Boat
Night Market
150 Year Gala

The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival began in 1994, as part of the festivities surrounding the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. In commemoration of Hong Kong Day, the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association arranged for dragon boats to be brought to Victoria from Vancouver for a one-day exhibition race.
The event was a huge success, and quickly blossomed into one of the city’s largest and most popular summer events, drawing up to 80,000 people to the Inner Harbour over three days. The event became so successful that the VCCA created a independent society to operate the festival.  www.victoriadragonboat.com

The idea of a Chinatown Night Market was presented to the Directors of the VCCA by local realtor, Tony Joe in early 2011. The Directors agreed to take on this project and struck a working committee to plan one market night as a trial run. That Market was very successful and the committee began planning to present one Market each month for June, July, August and September of 2012. The markets were held in the 500 block of Fisgard St in the Heart of Chinatown and offered both Food and Merchandise Vendors and Cultural Entertainment. Funding for the Markets was provided by the Province of BC, The City of Victoria and Corporate Sponsors. The biggest issue with running the market was staffing the event with volunteers and after 2 seasons the VCCA decided that the limited funding could not support a paid staffing for the event and it was too big of a time commitment for us to expect from our unpaid volunteers and so reluctantly the Market did not come back for the 2014 season.

On the 8th day of the 8th month in the year 2008 the VCCA presented a celebration of the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants in Canada. This celebration consisted of a Gala Awards ceremony held at the Empress Hotel and an original Pageant depicting the poignant events of a 150 years of Chinese history in Canada. The Awards Ceremony was a Gala Affair that present achievement awards to recognize persons of distinction in the Chinese community or for being instrumental in the growth and development of Chinese culture and business in Canada. . . . . for more
